Man about Town

A GENERAL Election has finally been called and that can only mean one thing.

You’ll get to see actual real-life politicians on your doorstep, rather than looking at them in newspapers grinning like Cheshire cats beside businessmen in suits.

It’s true that the majority of councillors work their socks off for their constituents, but it’s also true that the majority of people feel they don’t do enough for them either.

Ask most people and they’ll say that they don’t get value for money for their astronomical rates bill each month.

I’m paying 70 odd quid a month to get my bins collected and not much else it seems. Many other people feel the same.

The MPs’ expenses scandal hasn’t helped either, only cementing the opinion for some that politicians are in it for themselves first and the people second.

Let’s hope that the fallout from the latest rounds of political scandal will help change the dynamic between the voters and politicians.

There’s not a snowball’s chance in hell that it will, but it’s a nice thought all the same.

Speaking of nice thoughts, I’ve had one that could solve the problem of the ludicrous queues at the Quays Shopping Centre just to pay for your parking ticket.

If there are two of you, one could queue up at the ticket machine, while the other goes upstairs to the Omniplex to watch a film.

Let’s face it you’ll be free at the same time and there’s no point both of you queuing up for so long.
