Boost for Brennan

Last Updated Nov 2009

DECLAN Brennan's hopes of creating Irish snooker history have been given a tremendous boost after winning two national titles in as many weeks.

The Mayobridge 16-year-old, who is also a talented footballer and golfer, won the Northern Ireland U21 Snooker Championship in Drumgore, after winning every frame, including an impressive 136 break.

If that wasn't enough, at the end of October, the back-to-back U16 All-Ireland champion, also won the U19 Northern Ireland title in Antrim by amazingly winning every frame, including a 133 break.

And these wins put him in a positive frame of mind ahead of the U16 All-Ireland Finals, which takes place in Killarney in January.

If he wins there he will become the first Irish snooker player to win the U14 All-Ireland title three times in a row and the U16 All-Ireland title three times in a row.

“The two Northern Ireland title victories will definately help me,” said Brennan.

“I am happy with the way my game is going and I am still learning and improving every day and it would be great if I could go down in the history books.”

The St Mark's Warrenpoint A-Levels student is confident of winning the U16 title for the third time in a row and with breaks of 133 and 136 against much older players, he will be tough to beat.

He has already secured his place in the European Championships, which take place in Malta next March and Brennan is content with the pace of his progress.

He practices in the Cue Club, Newry, on a regular basis and would like to thank Jim Toner of JT Carpets for his generous sponsorship.
