AS many as 46 people, including children, are believed to be living in one house in Newry, it has been claimed.

Cllr Michael Savage (pictured) has told the Newry Democrat that he has been informed of the news by people within the education sector.

The SDLP Newry City representative says that the incident is just “the tip of the iceberg” and has reiterated his call for more social housing to be built in the city.

He said, “Unfortunately this is another symptom of the social housing crisis that we are faced with in Newry. We need 1,000 units built just to stand still to meet the current demand and until we get these units built some of the most vulnerable people in our city are being forced to live in unacceptable conditions.”
