Nine Squared brews new chapter with major revamp

Independent coffee house Nine Squared has announced a major refurbishment of its flagship store on Monaghan Street, Newry, almost four years after first opening its doors in 2021.

The renovation represents a significant investment in both the space and the community Nine Squared serves – with the store’s existing team of nine staff continuing to serve customers, while the refurbishment itself is employing a further ten people in Belfast.

Founded by Sean McDonnell, Nine Squared has become a firm favourite in Newry, known for its iconic coffee, tray bakes, and community-driven culture, attracting a loyal customer base since day one. The revamp underlines the brand’s commitment to the city and its ambition to set the standard for independent coffee experiences in the region.

Sean McDonnell, co-owner of Nine Squared, said:

“Newry is where it all began for us in 2021, and the community here has supported us every step of the way. This refurbishment is about giving something back — creating a refreshed, welcoming space that reflects who we are today and where we’re headed. We want Nine Squared Newry to remain a destination that locals are proud of, and a place where new visitors discover what makes our brand special.”

“Over the past four years, Nine Squared has become known not just for great coffee but for being a hub where conversations, creativity and community thrive. With the revamp, we’re doubling down on that promise. Our focus has always been on creating iconic spaces and experiences, and Newry deserves the very best of what Nine Squared has to offer.”

The refurbishment follows the recent opening of Nine Squared’s second location at The Printworks, Queen Street, Belfast earlier this year. The Newry project will deliver a modernised design, improved customer flow, and new event-ready features, ensuring the store continues to stand out as a leader in independent coffee culture, while aligning with the design-led vision established in Belfast.

Nine Squared is also a proud accredited Living Wage employer, one of the few in Northern Ireland, and remains committed to supporting and empowering its team across both Newry and Belfast.

Sean concluded:

“We believe our success is built on people — our staff, our partners, and the community around us. By investing in our Newry store and keeping our values front and centre, we’re excited for this next chapter and for welcoming customers back into a refreshed space that feels both familiar and brand new.”
