THIS is a lovely welcoming shop, a place that anyone would like to visit" says proud owner Anthony Reavey, whose vision of opening a bookshop has finally come true in the heart of Newry city centre.
The new family-run independent bookstore,'The Bookshelf', will officially open its doors this Friday, October 10 , on Monaghan Street, offering locals a space to relax, connect, and dive into the large collection of books available.
"We aim to create a lovely atmosphere, where people can come in, sit down and find comfort flicking through a book" Reavey explained. "Come in, relax, take the coat off and browse, unhurried. It will be a nice warm experience."
Encouraged by his daughter to fulfil a long-held ambition, Reavey sees 'The bookshelf' project as a chance to become "a cultural and community hub."
With room for author signings, book clubs, and other cultural events, the store is already drawing excitement.
"We've only announced the news that we will open the store and we've had great response from the community. People are contacting me to promote their books and their work, so we will definitely be organising events."
Reavey, a lifelong lover of books, says the inspiration is simple: "If I see a bookshop, I'm in there. Its something i,ve always had an interest in."
As Newry prepares to welcome 'The Bookshelf', this addition to the town marks not just another shop, but the beginning of a new cultural chapter in the city.
