TAKING upon himself a responsibility that no sibling ever should is former pupil of Saint Joseph Boy’s High School Newry Dawid Fulczyk.
Mr Fulczyk, who is the proud older brother of Dominik Fulczyk, has started an extensive fundraising campaign to generate the revenue needed to have his beloved younger brother undergo rehabilitative therapy in the wake of him being paralysed in a car accident.
Whilst being told the news that your much adored family member may never walk again would be enough to drown the spirits of almost anyone this is not the case for Dawid who in spite of his brother’s prognosis has resolved to do every thing he can to ensure that his sibling has the best quality of life going forward.
As Dawid himself explains it may cost as much as £50’000 to pay for the rehabilitative therapy which his brother requires, hence why he has began fundraising efforts both in Poland and contacted his former school her in Newry to raise awareness of his families situation.
Rehabilitative Therapy
“Dominik and I lived in Newry for ten years” explained Dawid. “Dominic was born in Daisy Hill Hospital.”
“We spent our lives in Newry just returning to Poland for vacations. We were meant to stay in Ireland for the rest of our lives but there were some decisions made and we just went back to Poland.
“He was a student of the Abbey Primary School and I went to Saint Joseph's Boys High School for a year. We returned to Poland in 2015.
“He was on a turn but didn't make it on the turn and fell out on the road. He hit two trees and his heart stopped. However thankfully behind him there was a medic driving in a car and had all the equipment that he needed to get Dominik's heart started again.
“He was in a coma for one month, later he was taken out of the coma and now he is awake. However at the beginning he was on strong pills and did not know what was happening around him but now he is fully awake and he is aware of what happened. We showed him photos of the car and told him what happened
“Later he was transported by ambulance to our local hospital in our city.
Later when he was diagnosed with a broken spine he got transported to a professional hospital. This happened on September 6. We are now in Miedzychod.
This is west of Poland. For now he is paralysed from the chest now and they do not give him any chances that he will walk again.
“The rehabilitative therapy will involve six months of rehabilitation in a private centre in Poland and probably a wheelchair for him and all the medications he will need and all the equipment later on. The overall estimated cost for this is about £50'000.”
Fundraising pages
Whilst a considerable portion of the amount required to cover the cost of Dominik’s post accident care has been provided to the Fulczyk family by their fellow countrymen and women , it was after Dawid was contacted by a former acquaintance of their’s based in Newry that the decision was made to appeal to the infinitely renewable reservoir of generosity possessed by the denizens of the city which both brothers called home for over a decade.
“We have a fundraising page in Poland in our currency but our friend Magdalena Nowicka in Newry encouraged us to fundraise on the GoFundMe because we lived in Ireland for 10 years. “We also have many friends and this is why we wanted to get as much help as possible to get him to get him closer to life again.”
If you want to provide a helping hand to Dawid and his family in their endeavour to ensure that their much beloved brother and son receives the care that he needs a donation can be made via their GoFundMe page which can be accessed via the Saint Joseph Boy’s High School’s Facebook page.
