STAYING true to their school’s trademark standard of altruism are the many hardworking pupils of the Abbey Christian Borther’s School Newry.
Over £16,000 has been raised for the school’s annual Zambia Immersion project which a terrific troupe of pupils from the school are set to embark upon this March.
The sum of £13,500 of this amount was raised as a result of the masked singer event held at the school last November, with a further £2,889 being raised through street bucket collections.
However, as Abbey pupil Ronan Shiels stated it is not now simply a case of hanging up their fundraising hats until March rolls around, with a myriad of school pupils set to host a 12 hour school spinathon event in aid of the much beloved Zambia Immersion project.
Spinathon
“We have raised over £15,000 for the Zambia Immersion Project.” said Ronan
“ The masked singer event raised over £13,500. We knew that we had a good amount of money coming in but we were also aware that we had a good amount of money coming out to pull of an event like this. Everyone was really happy becasue it was above expectations.
“The Spinathon will be from 8am to 8pm. We don't know how many people have signed up but obviously the Zambia team will be doing it and there will be at least one Zambia member cycling at all times.
“The rest of the school has a chance to participate because we send out sponsorship forms to all the classes and whoever has the most money raised before the spinathon in each of those classes gets a certain period of time out of class to have a go spinning on the bikes. This has been done before and is very successfully.
Regarding donations we will be going for the buckets in the school format. Most of the donations coming in are from the sponsorship forms that the students in the school are taking care of. However people can still contact the school office to make a donation, they have all the information there.
