ST MONICA’S boxer Kayla Harris was outstanding in the Irish Cadets Championship in Dublin at the weekend. On Friday night past she beat Ellie May Featherson from Mulhaddart boxing club in the semi final.

Then on Saturday she went on to beat Lily Reel from Dealgan to be crowned Girl 3 38kg Irish Cadet Champion. Having won this competition Kayla now has the chance to represent Ireland in the European Championships. This is what every young boxer trains so hard for.

Coach Alan McGreevy was very impressed with Kayla’s boxing over the weekend. He said, ‘The dedication and training that Kayla puts is at the club night after night is a credit to her. A few times it was touch and go whether she was going to participate as she was unwell over the weekend. She refused to pull out and this reflects her strong character’. Sean Duffy her corner man said, ‘even though Kayla was unwell she was relentless in both the semifinal and final. She is a great example to any young athlete, and I have no doubt there are bigger opportunities to come for Kayla in boxing ‘. The club would like to thank the coaches for their help and guidance at the weekend. Also, we would like to thank Kayla’s mum and Newry High School where she is currently a pupil.
