CAIN Markey’s hand was raised on Sunday in Gilford community centre to become the new Boy one 33kg champion. Cain had three very hard contests and on Friday night he had a third round stoppage over an excellent boxer Colin McShane from Castleblaney BC, writes Colm McCann.
Then on Saturday morning he had a great win over another difficult opponent Adam Breen from Keady BC. On Sunday morning after meeting another tough boxer Fionntan Breathnach from Annagry BC in Donegal Cian, after three hard fought rounds, had his hand was raised to claimed the gold.
Jamie Grey Cian’s coach said this was a great tournament for Cian.
“Three hard fights in three days. This was great experience for the young 11-year-old in his first year of competitive boxing,” said Grey.
“At such a young age the training this lad puts in 5 nights a week is a credit to him. Cian was at St Peters Primary School in Bessbrook on Friday and then on Friday night, Saturday morning and Sunday morning he was in the ring having three tough fights.”
Last week Joe (Toke) Mc Parland came away with gold in the Armagh Down Championship 44 kg where he beat Darragh Cunningham from Dealgan in a hard contest. Joe was the clear winner getting his hand raised to claim the contest. James McGuinness said Joe is boxing well and is ready to move up to the youth category this year. He is training very hard in the club and is getting ready for the open championship at the end of February.
“We also have James McCann getting his third call up to the Irish team and is travelling to Edinburgh this weekend with them to compete in a tournament against Scotland,” said McGuinness.
“ James is boxing well at the minute and after a great win for him at the clubs ten-year anniversary show in the Canal Court we wish him the best of luck this weekend.”
