CUAN Mhuire Newry (Sr Consilios) celebrates its 40th year in Northern Ireland on June 28.

To mark this momentous occasion a ceremony will take place at the Newry Cuan Mhuire Centre.

Guests expected at the event will include Health & Housing Agencies, Elected representatives, Cuan Mhuire Directors, management staff, volunteers ex-residents and community representatives.

The official opening of Cuan Mhuire Long-term Supportive accommodation apartments will also take place on this date at 1pm.

The Newry branch of Cuan Mhuire can trace its origins back to June 1984 when Kerry born Sisters of Mercy Nun, Sr Consilio Fitzgerald opened Cuan Mhuire Addiction Centre, the first Cuan Mhuire centre in Northern Ireland, on the Armagh Road in Newry.

In the forty years since the Newry branch of Cuan Mhuire has supported individuals and their families through the turmoil of addiction and set them on the long but ultimately rewarding road to recovery. As a result of the decision to establish a branch in Newry Sr Consilio and her committed and dedicated team have helped restore hope and change the lives of many thousands of people from throughout the North.

Little did she realise back in 1984 when arriving in Newry with her small group of dedicated supporters of the impact that Cuan Mhuire would have. Nowadays Sr Consilio and Cuan Mhuire is respected and appreciated by families and communities from all traditions and backgrounds, with the organisation leaving the original centre on the Armagh Road in 2012 and opened a new centre on the Old Dublin Road Newry.
