DEFENDING Irish Sprint Champion Broadstrand Syd puts his title on the line this Friday night at Dundalk Stadium, highlight of the Bar One Racing Dual Race & Family Day.

The premier two bend classic in Ireland, victory for Syd would bring his career earnings to over the 50,000 euro mark, 20,000 euro going to the greyhound who passes the post first in the prestigious decider.

Trained by John Linehan and owned by the Ryan-Drake-Donovan Syndicate, ‘Syd’, an August 22 son of Droopys Sydney and Droopys Alice, will break from the three box, the same trap which he blasted from the lift of the lids in his semi final on Saturday night.

Quickly establishing a two length lead Syd moved into his favoured inside rail slot, a move which was to prove crucial in the run to the opening corner.

The Michael Donovan trained Stonepark Browne was showing blistering pace and moved onto the tail of the leader at the opening bend.

However, Stonepark lost a crucial length and Syd was now two clear on the run for home.

As usual Syd remained glued to the rails and try as Stonepark did there was still a length and quarter between the two at the line.

The Patrick Gulifoyle trained Epic Ace took the third spot and in doing so booked his place in the decider.

Syd clocked a winning time of 20.91, fastest of the two semi finals.

The dog expected by many to put it up to Syd in the competition was the Paul Hennessy trained Lennies Tank.

The son of Good Cody and Deelish Oreo had really served it up to Syd in the earlier rounds but unfortunately injury forced his withdrawal leaving the opening semi a five dog affair.

Nevertheless, one could only but be impressed by the winning display of Droopys Patriot, the Robert Gleeson trained son of Droopys Wildcat-Droopys Alyssa retaining his unbeaten run in the stake.

Drawn in trap two, Patriot only seized the initiative rounding the second bend as Southwind Wild and Ballymac Brandan cut out the early running.

Patriot had two lengths in hand at the line and stopped the clock in 21.16, a few lengths slower than the second semi but the manner of victory was just as impressive.

The draw for the Bar One Racing Irish Sprint Cup was held after racing and resulted in the following:

Trap One - Ballymac Brandan

Trap Two - Droopys Patriot

Trap Three - Broadstrand Syd

Trap Four - Stonepark Browne

Trap Five - Southwind Wild

Trap Six - Epic Ace

There is little doubt that the defending Champion will go to traps as favourite to retain his title.

Before wagering one has to consider that there was only 0.2 of a second difference in the split times of Syd (7.02) and Patriot (7.04) on Saturday night.

Syd took a flyer in his semi and will have to break in similar fashion to get his beloved rail position.

Droopys Patriot is the new kid on the block and will be having only his ninth race. His supporters will be more than happy with his position in two.

Stonepark Browne is another finalist with huge pace and fully expect him to be in the mix.

A great final is in prospect. Six of the best sprinters in Ireland. Syd is the best in the best in the business and also the track holder for the 400 at Dundalk.

The defending champion has few flaws and has already proved that he has what it takes on the big night.

The Family Fun Day is one of the highlights of the year at Dundalk and another huge crowd is expected for what is sure to be a day of high drama mixed with loads of excitement and memories.
